Introducing the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology
The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology has been a member of the ISZS since 2008. Their Executive Office is located out side of Washington, D.C. in McLean, Virginia.
Formed in 1902, the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology is one of the oldest and more prestigious organizations of its kind. For most of its history it was known as the American Society of Zoologists. In 1996, the society changed its name to better reflect the scientific breadth, integrative approaches, and interests of its membership across all disciplines of zoology and biology. The primary focus of the SICB is to integrate the many fields of specialization which occur in the broad field of biology.
SICB manages a number of projects and programs. It is organized around 11 disciplinary divisions including animal behaviour, comparative biomechanics, comparative endocrinology, comparative physiology & biochemistry, developmental & cell biology, ecology & evolution, invertebrate zoology, neurobiology, systematic & evolutionary biology, and vertebrate morphology. Members of SICB choose their division affiliations. Many divisions have a Researchers Database, which contains short articles on various scientific topics and questions. For example, Dr. Kimberly S. Bostwick contributed the article “How birds make sounds with their wings and how did it evolve” to the Division of Comparative Biomechanics Researchers Database.
Every year the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology holds a society meeting. These annual meetings have been held since 1960. This year’s meeting was in Seattle. The 2011 Annual Meeting will be held in Salt Lake City, UT.
The official journal of the SICB is Integrative and Comparative Biology (prior to 2002 titled American Zoologist). The journal publishes symposia proceedings and abstracts from the Annual Meetings as well as book reviewers, reports and special bulletins.
In addition, to the journal, the SICB’s publications include the SICB Digital Library and SICB Newsletter. The Digital Library provides peer-reviewed instructional materials, resources and activities in integrative and comparative biology for faculty to enhance undergraduate education at two- and four-year colleges and universities. The Newsletter is published twice a year and provides updates on the Society’s activities.
Dr. Brett J. Burk is the Executive Director of SICB and the society’s representative to the ISZS. The ISZS is proud to have the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology as an institutional member and looks forward to collaborating with the SICB in the future.
